Susan G. Komen Consolidation

The local Susan G. Komen Oregon and SW Washington affiliate will be closing its doors as of March 31, 2021. Details on this decision can be found below.

WHY THE CHANGE:

Susan G. Komen® national leadership announced in April 2020 that it would consolidate the entire affiliate network into “One Komen” to provide greater efficiency and effectiveness in its mission.

Last spring, in an effort to continue to serve our community as long as possible and in preparation for this change, we closed our physical office space in downtown Portland and began to work remotely, reduced salaries, and made tough personnel changes.

In the late fall, Komen Oregon and SW Washington learned all operations – programs, services, fundraising, marketing, technology, accounting will be managed in Dallas, Texas.

By March 31, 2021, Susan Komen Oregon and SW Washington will be fully transitioned to the new Susan G. Komen® model. The last day for the majority of our staff will be February 19, 2021, with key staff to oversee the logistics of the consolidation and transition of local programs through March.

WHERE EXISTING FUNDS WILL GO:

We remain steadfast in our focus to provide for our local breast cancer community through the funds we have raised here.

As our legacy programs transition, we will give over $200,000 to community partners to either continue the work we began or to further enhance their work. The organizations and programs (some to be finalized) include:

  • African American Initiative
  • Breast Friends
  • NW Family Services
  • OHA ScreenWise
  • PeaceHealth SW
  • Pink Lemonade Project
  • Research (Susan G. Komen®)
  • Treatment Access Program
  • Worship in Pink

After March 31, Komen National will direct the activities in our area, continuing to have a presence and offer support through national programs for years to come. In addition, all money raised in the Oregon and SW Washington region will go to Susan G. Komen® in Dallas, TX, and benefit national programs and services.

WE ARE FAMILY:

We know this change is upsetting; we deeply empathize with you. Susan G. Komen Oregon and SW Washington has been a place of support, friendship, and family during some of the hardest times in our lives, and it is with a heavy heart that we deliver this news today.

Rest assured, that together, we have made a lasting difference.

Collectively, we are incredibly proud of the work we have completed in the last 29 years. In that time, we have built a strong and loyal family of supporters in the fight against breast cancer; raised $35 million for programs that prioritize the importance of improving breast health and building on the quality of life for breast cancer patients; and funded local cutting-edge research.

And, we couldn’t have done it without people like you.
