Paula Burt has been an active supporter since 2007 when her friend was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. This was a devastating wake up call for Paula, who previously had not stayed up to date on her own breast health. She began doing regular self-exams and annual mammograms.
“Early detection so if the unthinkable does happen, it is caught earlier.”
Paula has walked and supported the cause for over 15 years. In 2008 Paula became involved in her company’s race committee and the next year she became co-captain of the company team. Due to her passion for the cause she was invited to join the Komen Walk Committee and she has been on the committee for the past 5 years. Paula is passionate about ending breast cancer and doing that through supporting Komen.
“It started with a friend, but through this journey, I have met so many people and made new friends that continue to renew my passion. I do this for them, for my mom, for my sister, for my friends, for my family and for me.”
When asked what advice she had for anyone recently diagnosed Paula emphasized resources and having a support system is crucial and that to remember you are not alone.
“This disease doesn’t discriminate; it can touch any one of us directly or indirectly and so I wanted to be involved in any way that I could.”
