AMBASSADOR BOARD - Member highlight!
March was a busy month for advocacy. Andrew Asato and Cindy Fletcher joined other Komen affiliates in Washington, DC for the Komen Advocacy Conference. They talked with Oregon’s congressional delegation about funding for free mammograms and research, as well as about the importance of oral cancer drug parity. Komen’s legislative priorities, at the national level, can be found here.
At the state level, Cindy, Cristela Daniel, and 10 Komen volunteers, joined the American Cancer Society for the Cancer Action Network (CAN) Day at the Capitol on March 13th. They advocated about the importance of state funding for the Oregon Screenwise Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. If you have received Screenwise BCCP services and would like to share your story, please contact Cindy at email@example.com.
METASTATIC BREAST CANCER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
This spring, Komen Oregon and SW Washington will launch its first Metastatic Breast Cancer Dinner Series event. An expert will talk about a topic of interest to people living with metastatic breast cancer, in a small group dinner setting. More details with dates and locations are to come. If you, or someone you know, are living with metastatic breast cancer and have a topic you’d like to know more about, please email Bridget at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Save September 22-23, 2017 for the Northwest Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference in Seattle, WA. A very informative program is in the works, created by and for people living with stage IV metastatic breast cancer.
BREAST CANCER ISSUES CONFERENCE - Registration Opens January 16th!
More than 450 peopled attended the Breast Cancer Issues Conference, between Portland and five simulcast sites in Bend, Eugene / Springfield, Medford, Newport, and Roseburg, earlier this month! Photos and select session videos can be found on the BCI Conference web page.
COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
We partner with Medical Foundation of Marion Polk Counties, Northwest Family Services, and Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation, on our Latina Initiative. Community health workers from these organizations educate their communities on the importance of screening in the early detection of breast cancer. They seek out and help eligible Latinas to overcome barriers to care, assisting them in getting their clinical breast exam and mammogram, as well as in understanding the results. If additional diagnostic testing or treatment is needed, the community health worker facilitates a warm handoff to a patient navigator.
The morning was wild with snow, rain and sunshine. But most of all, it was filled with much hope, strength and joy. More than 1,000 people (and pooches!) came together as a community to celebrate survivors and forever fighters, to raise $150,000 for services and programs in the region, and to have a good time. Thank you for your all of your support in the Eugene Race for the Cure. See you next March 2018! Please share your thoughts. Photos can be found here.

PEOPLE AND PROJECTS
The Portland Police Bureau and Portland Police Association joined forces with Susan G. Komen Oregon and SW Washington in the fight again breast cancer last fall. As several officers at the bureau have been diagnosed with breast cancer, Chief Michael Marshman has a very personal connection to breast cancer, their team decided to do something about it. Pink police-issued patches, pins, shoelaces, and a car and motorcycle ribbon decals sparked conversations with the public. Ann Berryman and Andrew Asato were honored to receive $5,035 from the entire bureau. THANK YOU!
