Research, Early Detection, Survivor Support, Advocacy
  Issue: May-June 2016

Susan G. Komen Oregon & SW Washington's priorities are early detection (education, screening and diagnostic services), financial assistance and resources during and after treatment, advocacy and cutting-edge research.

Happy summer! Over the past 15 months, I have learned so much about the collective breast health work taking place right here in our communities. It is humbling to feel the passion, the commitment, and the many ways you help those affected by breast cancer every day.

Twenty-five years ago, Susan G. Komen was created as a locally based affiliate by three breast cancer survivors. It was a time when it was much harder to utter the words breast cancer in public. These determined women started Komen from their homes, and then put all of their energy, time, and resources into creating the first Race for the Cure in downtown Portland. They didn’t stop there. They wanted to change the way we talk about breast cancer and how we provide support to individuals and families faced with this disease.

We stand on their shoulders, knowing we have built upon their foundation in our continued fight against breast cancer. Today, the relative five-year survival rate is 99%, when found early and confined to the breast, and the death rate has decreased by 33%. While we continue to make real progress, this race is far from over for so many who fight this disease daily. Each week, an average number of 63 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in our region. Eleven individuals will still lose their lives. Komen’s commitment is to remain resolute with our community partners to be tougher than breast cancer.

With your involvement and support, we aim to continue to forward our progress through survivor and fighter support, local initiatives, education programs, and funding research, helping one individual at a time through their breast cancer journey. As always, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for joining us in this fight.

Best Wishes,

Andrew Asato
Chief Executive Officer
