Komen Oregon Statement on Leadership Transition at Susan G. Komen for the Cure Headquarters
August 9, 2012 (Portland, Ore.) --- The national headquarters of Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced yesterday that CEO Nancy G. Brinker, President Liz Thompson and two board members, Brenda Lauderback and Linda Law, will be leaving their current roles with the organization.
The Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure views this transition as part of the process of moving past the distraction of earlier this year.
As you know, our local Affiliate strongly and vocally opposed the national organization’s revised grant guidelines. The most painful aspect of the controversy was seeing our critical work – and the unmet need for care – overshadowed by national events.
Supporters have expressed disappointment, but also resolve and renewed determination. Most importantly, they have redoubled their commitment to our shared vision of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever.
With over 60,000 uninsured, low-income women in Oregon alone, we must not waver from our most pressing priority – to serve the most vulnerable women in our community, remove barriers, provide critical care, and give hope to all touched by breast cancer.
For the past 20 years, Komen Oregon has directed more than $20 million toward breast cancer screening, education, transportation and survivor support. We’re making a difference. And seventy-five percent of Komen Oregon dollars stay local to support low-income women with life-saving resources.
Our ability to save lives and fund critical research is entirely dependent on the generosity of our supporters.
We invite all those committed to ending breast cancer forever to stand with us at the Race for the Cure in Portland on September 16th and Eugene on October 21st. We’re counting on you. We’re here, we’re committed, and we need you with us.
Komen Oregon believes that we will end breast cancer forever because of the focus and intensity of our volunteers and donors. Komen Oregon’s commitment to our mission is and will always be, unwavering.
