Komen for the Cure® Concerned Federal Screening Mammography Guidelines Beginning to Limit Access for Younger Women "When a federal panel late last year recommended that American women in their 40s need not get annual screening mammograms, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® raised concerns that the new guidelines would result in denial of the potentially life-saving procedure for too many young women.

Affiliate News 9.25.09 • During breast cancer awareness month on Thursday, October 29th, the Portland Trailblazers will help raise awareness about breast cancer in their second game of the season against the Denver Nuggets. “Komen Night at the Blazers” will be a special night to honor breast cancer survivors and support your local Komen Affiliate. Learn more! Affiliate News 9.8.09 • Susan G. Komen for the Cure was recently awarded Charity Navigator’s coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management for the third year in a row. According to Charity Navigator’s CEO Ken Berger, only 12% of the charities they rate have received at least three consecutive 4-star ratings. Affiliate News 9.1.09 • The Co-Survivor Booth at both the Health Expo and the Komen Portland Race for the Cure will be bigger and better this year! At Health Expo, we will have Breast Friends, Men Against Breast Cancer and the Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure sharing a larger booth. We will continue to have the wonderful Breast Friends chain, educational information and fun items for sale, delicious free snacks and new information to help support men facing breast cancer with a loved one. We will also have our new "Breast Health Bill of Rights" that lists all fo the laws in Oregon related to breast cancer. Come find us near the finish line on Race day and get your pictures taken! The Komen Community Profile is a local needs assessment conducted every two years by our Affiliate. The goal of the community profile is to identify gaps in services, improve breast health services and be more aware of populations most in need of breast health services. Click here to learn more and download the Community Profile... Educational Message of the Week: Early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer. When breast cancer is diagnosed at its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is over 95%. Women should begin monthly breast self exams by age 20 and have a clinical breast exam at least once every three years. Remind yourself to perform your monthly breast self exam by marking the date on your calendar or putting a reminder in your cell phone. Pick a date that is easy to remember, like your birthday. Upcoming Events • The 2009 Komen Survivor Celebration Luncheon has been suspended; the Affiliate plans to celebrate survivorship at the 2009 Komen Portland Race for the Cure on September 20, 2009, with an expanded Survivor Tent area to accommodate more Survivors and activities the morning of the Race. Read more... • The Waterford Health Fitness Club in Vancouver, Washington announces the Pink Ribbon Program, a specialized fitness program for breast cancer survivors that addresses post-surgery issues such as body image, frozen shoulder and/or range of motion, depression and anxiety. On June 25 the club will host a presentation to introducuve individuals to the program and answer questions. Click here to learn more about the program... • Explore the principles of self-healing with Emmet Miller, MD, as he presents "Awakening the Healer Within", an informative workshop to help individuals tap in to inner resources to aid in the healing process. This workshop will take place on Saturday, August 1st at Providence St. Vincent Cancer Center in Portland. $99 if registered by June 30th. For more information or to register please call (971) 391-0549. • Researchers in Public Health at Oregon State University are conducting a study of the factors that impact women's breast cancer survivorship processes. You may participate by completing their anonymous, one time, ONLINE survey by clicking here. The survey takes only 20-25 minutes to complete, is entirely anonymous and requires NO further participation. Research approved by OSU IRB: protocol #4075. • Lesbian and bisexual survivors are needed for a breast cancer research study. The information gained from this research into the well-being and quality of life of lesbian and bisexual breast cancer survivors will be used to develop programs and services designed to reduce health disparities. If you choose to join this study, you will be asked to take part in a phone survey that will last approximately 35 minutes. The survey can be taken from anywhere in the country. Questions about your health, medical history, sexual orientation, and demographics will be asked. One hundred women are needed for this study. The study is being conducted by Ulrike Boehmer, PhD, at the Boston University School of Public Health. Click here to sign-up. |
